Instrument Rating

We always strongly suggest obtaining the Instrument rating, although not required, it will definitely help you in many ways. Instrument flight training teaches students the skills necessary to fly a helicopter under conditions of restricted visibility, utilizing only instruments and communication with air traffic control for navigation.

Instrument Flight Rating Requirements

  • Must posses at least a private pilot rating
  • Must read, write, understand, and speak english
  • Must have logged at least 50 hours of cross-country pilot-in-command (PIC) flight time
  • Must pass an FAA written instrument knowledge test (Prior to taking FAA practical flight test)
  • 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time of which, 15 hours must be with an authorized instructor who holds an instrument-helicopter rating (CFII)
  • Up to 20 hours of the 40 hours of instrument time required can be performed in our FRASCA TruFlite H Simulator
  • Complete one (1) 100-nautical-mile instrument cross-country instructional flight which includes at least 3 different instrument approaches
  • Must pass an FAA instrument oral and practical flight test (Check ride)
