Requirements

Before you can earn your CFI rating, you must hold a helicopter Commercial Pilot License. As a Certified Flight Instructor, you’ll be qualified to instruct flight school students working towards their private or commercial pilot license.

Take the next step in your career with a Certified Instrument Flight Instructor rating. The Certified Instrument Flight Instructor rating allows you to instruct students working towards their instrument rating. Most flight schools prefer to hire CFIIs, so pursuing this rating will help prepare you for your future career in aviation.

CFI

  • Read, write, understand, and speak English
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a Commercial Pilot License
  • Hold a current FAA Medical Certificate
  • Pass both FAA written knowledge tests: Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI) and the Helicopter Flight Instructor
  • Pass an FAA Practical Exam

CFII

  • Read, write, understand, and speak English
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a Commercial Pilot License with an instrument rating
  • Hold a current FAA Medical Certificate
  • Pass both FAA written knowledge tests: Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI) and the Helicopter Flight Instructor Instrument (If you’ve already taken the FOI exam for your CFI rating, you don’t need to take it again for your CFII.)
  • Pass an FAA Practical Exam
